OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-5.5, which the company calls its smartest and most intuitive model to date. The new algorithm brings increased capabilities across multiple domains, with OpenAI president Greg Brockman describing it as a significant advancement toward more agentic and intuitive computing.

This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future, Brockman said on a call with journalists. It is faster and sharper at thinking, using fewer tokens compared to GPT-5.4, which means more frontier AI is available for businesses and consumers.

The Super App Strategy

GPT-5.5 represents another step toward OpenAI vision of creating a super app — a multi-purpose platform that combines ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser into one unified service for enterprise customers. The co-founders have discussed launching this consolidated interface that would simplify how businesses interact with AI systems.

The super app concept mirrors similar ambitions from competitors. Elon Musk, Altman former colleague and rival, has stated he wants to transform X into its own super app, signaling industry-wide recognition that unified AI interfaces will be central to enterprise adoption.

Performance Claims

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is designed for foundational enterprise areas including agentic coding and knowledge work, as well as experimental applications in mathematics and scientific research. The company released benchmark data showing the model outperforming previous versions and competing models from Google and Anthropic across multiple categories.

Mark Chen, OpenAI chief research officer, said GPT-5.5 demonstrates meaningful gains on scientific and technical research workflows. The model shows improved capability at navigating computer work and could assist expert scientists in making progress, including in drug discovery — an area that has attracted increased industry investment.

Rapid Release Cycle

The release continues OpenAI aggressive development pace. The company launched GPT-5.4 only last month, with previous releases in December and November. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI chief scientist, indicated this tempo should continue: We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term. In fact, I think the last two years have been surprisingly slow.

Availability and Deployment

GPT-5.5 is deploying to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT starting Thursday. The enhanced GPT-5.5 Pro variant is headed to Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers. The model is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks with improved tool orchestration — a capability that enterprise customers have increasingly demanded as they move from AI experiments to production workflows.

Cybersecurity Considerations

During the press briefing, questions arose about GPT-5.5 capabilities relative to Mythos, the cybersecurity tool recently announced by Anthropic. Mia Glaese, a member of OpenAI technical staff, said the company has a strong and longstanding strategy for its approach to cyber defense, with a refined approach to rolling out models safely.
