Here is a sentence you've probably seen this week: Anthropic's new AI teammate writes 65% of the company's code, including the code that built itself. It's a great line. It's also not what the source says.

What Fortune actually reported, in the launch coverage for Claude Tag — Anthropic's new always-on Slack agent — is that the tool is "approving and incorporating 65% of the code changes the product team submits." Read those two verbs again, because they're the entire story: approving and incorporating. Not writing. The 65% is a measure of how many human-submitted (and tool-submitted) changes the agent autonomously reviews and merges, not how much of the code it authored. Somewhere between the press release and the headline, "approves and merges" became "writes," and a statistic about code review got promoted into a statistic about code creation.

Those are not the same claim, and the gap between them is where I want to live for a minute, because it's more revealing than either number. "AI wrote 65% of our code" is a story about machines replacing the act of programming. "AI approves and merges 65% of our changes" is a story about machines replacing the act of judgment — deciding what's good enough to ship. The second is arguably the more consequential claim, and it's the one that's true, and almost nobody is reporting it because the first one is sexier. We've collectively chosen the wrong headline because the wrong headline reads better.

This is how the whole genre works. "AI now writes most of our code" has become a recurring boast across the industry, and every time it surfaces, the same three questions go unasked. First: 65% of what? Lines? Commits? Pull requests? Features? The denominator is doing enormous undisclosed work, and "65%" without it is a number cosplaying as a measurement. Second: who's counting, and where? This figure comes from Anthropic's own product team, using Anthropic's own tooling, in the single most AI-fluent engineering environment that exists on Earth. It is the least generalizable sample you could possibly pick — the home-field number presented as the league average. Third, and most basic: write or review? The conflation I just walked through isn't unique to this story. It's the standard move. Authorship and approval get blurred because the blur flatters everyone — the lab that built the tool and the outlet that needs the headline.

I'm not saying the number is fake. I'm saying it's been transcribed into a claim it doesn't support, and that the transcription is the actual phenomenon worth covering. When a lab tells you its AI writes most of its code, the useful response is not awe. It's "define your terms," and the terms almost never survive contact.

Now set the stat aside, because the stat was never the real news anyway. The real news is where Claude Tag lives: Slack. Anthropic spent two years building agentic coding tools that ran in the IDE and the command line — developer surfaces, single-player, where engineers already are. Claude Tag moves the agent into the channel where the entire company already works, assignable in any thread, running tasks asynchronously so it doesn't block anyone. Anthropic's own product lead frames it as the "multiplayer" evolution of the single-player coding tools. That's product-speak, but it's pointing at something true: this is Anthropic walking its agent out of engineering and into the rest of the org.

And that is a direct shot at Microsoft. Copilot-in-Teams is the incumbent on the enterprise-chat surface, and the place it's weakest is exactly where Claude Tag is aimed — ambient autonomy, an agent that follows threads and acts on its own rather than waiting to be prompted. Anthropic is attacking the collaboration layer at its soft spot, monetized through Enterprise and Team seats, not Free or Pro. The forced part makes the intent unmistakable: Anthropic is retiring its old Slack integration on August 3, so every existing Slack-Claude user has to migrate to the new paid teammate or lose access. That's not a feature launch. That's a conversion funnel with a deadline.

A couple of things in the viral version I'd flag as unconfirmed before anyone repeats them: the widely-shared claim that Claude Tag runs on Opus 4.8 isn't stated in the primary coverage, and neither is the irresistible detail that it wrote the code for itself. Both are plausible — Anthropic dogfoods aggressively — but plausible and sourced are different things, and this story is already a case study in the distance between them.

Where this goes: the August 3 migration is the part I'd actually watch, because it's the first time the approve-and-merge number gets tested outside Anthropic's greenhouse.
